Youth Program

Highlights of the Dauphin Friendship Centre Youth Program

The Dauphin Friendship Centre has recently completed renovations on a building that was recently purchased through fundraising dollars to house our Youth Centre. This new facility gives us the space necessary to provide further quality programming for youth in our community in a safe environment.

The youth are keeping busy in their new space and enjoy the activities provided.

The youth centre is open to youth ages 6 to 24, providing them with a safe, friendly atmosphere and a chance to participate in activities they might not otherwise have access to.

The Youth Council, participants and staff work together to plan and implement indoor and outdoor sports events. Tournaments and recreational activities for youth include gym nights, skating, bowling, baseball, football, swimming, hiking, camping and fishing.

The cultural component of our youth program includes our pow wows, square dancing, drum groups, and fiddling programs. We also work with elders to plan activies such as arts and crafts, traditional teachings, medicine harvesting, making traditional regalia, and participation in ceremonies.

Our youth program partners with other services in Dauphin including Public Health Nurse, Mental Health Workers, Alcoholism Foundation of Manitoba, Parkland Crisis Centre, Healthy Baby Program, Diabetes Prevention, and Chronic Disease Prevention Program. We advise youth with health and safety workshops, bullying workshops, sex education, addictions awareness, as well as life skills and parenting skills development.

We provide a safe place for youth to come and participate in programs as well as a place for positive social interaction. Equipment has been purchased and space acquired to hold activities/programs such as dances, feasts, movie nights, coffee houses, camping trips, tournaments, cooking classes and other indoor and outdoor activities.

We encourage youth to take a leadership role in the community. They are given opportunities to work with and take an active and positive role in community groups and organizations. The youth are encouraged to volunteer in community events such as parades, street fairs, and to take a leadership role in graffiti clean up in the City of Dauphin.
