Food For Thought

The program began October 1990. The Friendship Centre staff noticed that many children attending Dauphin Ochre School Area #1, were not going home for lunch. The staff began preparing soup and sandwiches and made them available two days per week. In a brief time 75 students from all age levels were enrolled in the program.

Depending on the enrollment the program can prepare for and feed up to 400 students per meal. The program offers meals utilizing the Canadian Food Guide. Some of our most popular food items include: pizza buns, stew & bannock, grilled cheese sandwiches, beefaroni & spaghetti. These are served with fresh vegetables, fruit, juice and a friendly smile :)

The program continues to grow annually. We can expect that the program will utilize 100 to 150 volunteers and cost up to $20,000.00 per year.

And Today

The Program continues to provide hot and nutritious meals to students in Dauphin each Tuesday and Thursday from November to March. We have established long standing and vital partnerships with organizations that continue to assist the program in many ways.

And as in the past years there is no cost for children to attend the program. No child is refused entry, but registration is a requirement. There is also an expectation that the participants will eat what they are given/take and treat each other and the volunteers with respect.

How does the program work?

Registration into the program is very simple. Packages are sent to each school for distribution. Forms are filled out and returned to the schools who then forward them to the Dauphin Friendship Centre.

The elementary schools are scheduled to rotate one month of bussing to the DFC. The remainder of the program has children accessing meals in the schools, delivered and served by program volunteers. Students from MMS and DRCSS walk to DFC for their lunch.

A Final Word

The Dauphin Friendship Centre does contribute a large portion of the funds required to deliver this program. These funds are raised through our weekly Bingos and other fundraising campaigns. Parents are invited to make contributions if circumstances allow. This includes financial and volunteer commitments. Local organizations, service clubs and individuals are invited to become a partner by making a donation throughout the program duration.
